How to Play UNO No Mercy:

The rules are brutal. You can stack draw cards, meaning if someone plays a +4, you can play a +4 to make the next person draw 8! The 7 and 0 rules apply: playing a 7 lets you swap hands with another player, and playing a 0 makes everyone pass their hand to the next player. The game ends when one player gets rid of all their cards, or everyone else is eliminated by the Mercy Rule (25+ cards).

Can You Play UNO No Mercy With 2 Players? Rules and Adjustments

June 21, 2026

UNO is often seen as a party game best played with a large group of friends. But what if it's just you and one other person? Can you play UNO No Mercy with 2 players?

The short answer is yes. The official player count on the box is 2 to 6 players. However, playing with only two people requires some slight adjustments to how certain cards work. Here are the rules for a head-to-head match!

Official 2-Player Adjustments

When playing standard UNO with two players, cards like Reverse and Skip act the same way: they skip the other player and give you another turn. This is exactly the same in No Mercy.

However, some of the new action cards need clarification:

  • Skip Everyone: In a 2-player game, playing a "Skip Everyone" card simply skips your opponent's turn. It functions identically to a regular Skip card.
  • The 0 Card: When a 0 is played, all players must pass their hands in the direction of play. In a 2-player game, you simply swap hands with your opponent.
  • The 7 Card: The 7 card allows you to choose an opponent to swap hands with. In a 2-player game, you have no choice—you must swap with the other person.

Does The Mercy Rule Still Work?

Yes! The Mercy Rule (elimination if you reach 25 cards) is still incredibly effective in a 2-player game. In fact, because penalties bounce back and forth between only two people, stacks can get incredibly high, very fast. It is very common for 2-player games to end via the Mercy Rule rather than someone emptying their hand.

House Rules for 2 Players

If you find that 2-player games end too quickly because of the Mercy Rule, try these popular house rules:

  1. Increase the Limit: Change the Mercy Rule limit from 25 cards to 35 or 40 cards. This extends the game significantly.
  2. Remove the 0s and 7s: Some players find swapping hands too chaotic in a 1-on-1 match. Removing these cards turns the game into a pure test of drawing and penalty stacking.

UNO No Mercy is a fantastic 2-player game that is much more aggressive and fast-paced than classic UNO. Shuffle the massive 168-card deck and get ready for a brutal duel!
